Since vaping hit the market about a decade ago, it’s been hugely popular. Between the fact that there are literally a million flavors and the whispers that vaping is “healthier” than cigarettes, these little portable cloud machines have made quite an impact on people. Unfortunately, whether your inhaling smoke from burning plant matter or vapor, inhaling anything other than air in to your lungs can have ill side effects. So how does one choose between the lesser of two evils without just quitting all together (which can be extremely hard for some people)? This blog goes over some of the differences between vaping and cigarettes to help you make the best choice for yourself.
There are chemicals in both cigarettes and vape juice. Most people are well aware of the negative effects that smoking cigarettes has on the body. In fact, there are at least 20+ chemicals (out of the thousands that cigarettes contain) that have a strong connection to causing cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. The combustion of the tobacco leaves if what sets off this process, creating the smoke which is full of chemicals. Vaping doesn’t use combustion and studies show that the vapor produced contains significantly less chemicals than cigarettes. While cigarette smoke can contain things like arsenic and lead, vapor contains vegetable glycerol, nicotine, and propylene glycol. Anything else in the juice is usually related to flavoring and is typically food grade, meaning safe to consume. However, ingesting these chemicals is different than vaping them and the long term effects of vapor are not quite known yet.
According to statistics, there were 90,000 smoking materials fires in the US over the course of 2011. Of these 90,000 incidents, there were 540 deaths and 1,640 injuries. The cost of damages was also exponential, totaling out at a grand $621 million. While cigarette companies now make “fire safe” cigarettes and furniture is more fireproof than previous years, there are still plenty of cigarette-started fires that happen every day. One recently happening in Manchester, where someone fell asleep with a cigarette and burned half a building down. Vaping, in comparison, doesn’t have any risk of starting a fire if you drop it. However, when the process was still fairly new, there were many reports of exploding batteries. There is a website that lists all of the known battery explosions that have occurred since 2007. The website states that there have been 243 total reported explosions; 63 of which were during use, 84 during the charging process, 52 during storage or transport, and 44 involving spare batteries for various mods. There were 158 incidents that resulted in personal injuries.
When it comes to cost, vaping is clearly the superior option however. While the initial machine might seem like a steep price to pay, research done by Tobacco Control in 2017 found that one pack of cigarettes costs roughly $13 in New York. The average smoker buys about five packs a week, which totals out at $65 a week or $260 a month. The yearly cost for this level of cigarette intake is $3120 OR MORE a year. This number doesn’t include any health related costs either. Vaping, on the other hand, might be a bit pricey to start, with a machine being around $50 and maybe $15 a week for a bottle of juice. That’s for a heavy user as well. But even so, this would only total out at a grand $720 a year. But be careful, studies also showed that since vaping is much more easily accessible, people tend to vape more than they smoked.
What’s the bottom line? It’s still tough to say for sure. A report published by the Public Health England said that electronic cigarettes are at least 95% safer than tobacco cigarettes and also recognizes e-cigarettes as a legitimate way to quit smoking. Even so, the American Heart Association published a 20 page statement in 2014, suggesting that e-cigarettes are less hazardous than tobacco and vaping can actually assist smokers in quitting. Their report said; “e-cigarettes either do not contain or have lower levels of several tobacco-derived harmful and potentially harmful constituents compared with cigarettes and smokeless tobacco… E-cigarettes present an opportunity for harm reduction if smokers use them as substitutes for cigarettes.”
The choice is yours, ultimately. But many people seem to agree that vaping is better for you than tobacco cigarettes. Smokers can look in to vaping as a way to quit smoking cigarettes completely. And while the long term effects of vaping aren’t completely known quite yet, it can be a great device to help you get away from cigarettes and quit smoking anything all together!
