Intro To Shibari

Blog By M. Mitera

In the year 2018, people aren’t as vanilla as they used to be. With the help of the internet, kinks have made themselves very well known over the years. These days, people aren’t as ashamed to broadcast their preferences as they were before. One of the more commonly found kinks among sexually active individuals is the practice of Japanese rope bondage. This practice is extremely popular in the BDSM communities and is a very connecting experience, bringing the model and the person tying very close together.

Japanese rope bondage is known as “kinbaku” or “shibari”. In the west, the term “shibari” is much more common, although it doesn’t exactly mean the same thing as “kinbaku”. Kinbaku (“tight binding”) carries a traditional Japanese meaning. While on one hand, shibari refers to a generalization of tying, kinbaku refers to tying and binding in a sexual sense. Kinbaku is bondage art, where shibari is technically just tying. Some experts in the BDSM community consider kinbaku to be tying sessions with a strong emotional connection between the rigger and model.

Even though the term “shibari” doesn’t carry the deep meaning with it, the word is becoming more and more popular across the world. Even in Japan, the word shibari is being used more and more to describe the experience of Japanese rope play. However, the word is still considered by some to be a wrong Western Japanism and doesn’t convey the sexual context of kinbaku.

This particular style of bondage pays special attention to the way the rope looks on the model, as well as the position assumed during the tying. Sometimes, uncomfortable positions are tied on purpose to provide an aesthetic look for the person doing the tying. Traditional Japanese bondage uses specific forms and aesthetic rules to spotlight the model’s position. The most important ties in the traditional Japanese bondage play are the Ushiro Takatekote, which is an arm box tie of sorts as well as the Ebi (“shrimp”), which was originally designed as a torture tie.

This kind of play is on the rise and people are becoming more and more apt to trying it. The bond between a model and the person rigging the rope can be so extreme. It is highly recommended that you give this act a try with your partner or even by yourself (there are some wonderful ties that you can do alone that don’t require a partner’s help! These are great for practice!). Be on the lookout for more rope play blogs as we delve deeper in to this amazing act! Thanks for reading!
