Glass Vs. Wood Vs. Metal Pipes

There are so many different kinds of pipes out there nowadays. Creative smokers will make pipes out of anything, including fruit and even a hot dog! (Yes, that would probably taste disgusting. I wouldn’t recommend making a hot dog pipe….) There are a few tried and true options for the best smoking experience; you can use pipes made from glass, wood or metal. In this post we will discover what the pros and cons of using each type of pipe are.

Glass  is probably the most widely used method seeing as it is easy to make and is very affordable. Here are the pros and cons to this type of pipe:

  • Pros: Readily available, inexpensive, easy to clean, does not disrupt the flavor of  tobacco, comes in really cool colors and shapes for every style, can be used to make a variety of different types such as water pipes and one hitters. The glass pipes made today are pretty strong and most will survive a minor drop.
  • Cons: Breakable if dropped or hit too hard, most are not very discreet with size and color, difficult to travel with due to fragility and size.

Wood  is not as popular but does have pros over glass pipes:

  • Pros: Generally made to be very small and discreet, some are fold-able for easy traveling, potentially will alter the flavor of the tobacco in a positive way, unique designs that make cool gifts, sometimes accompanied with a mini stash spot too.
  • Cons: Not easy to clean, will wear with use, will potentially alter the flavor of the tobacco, tend to be small, not very common to find for purchase.

Metal  is an inexpensive, easy to find option that gets the job done:

  • Pros: Cheap, easy to find, discreet shape and size, many come with an “oven” on top to keep the matter burning, comes in various colors and shapes, can be taken apart which makes it easy to clean.
  • Cons: Generally small bowl sizes, can get really hot when smoking and cause potential for burns, does not last quite as long as glass or wood, flavors the tobacco sometimes unpleasantly, hits can be harsher because metal heats up quickly and holds onto the heat.

Smoke Shop Etiquette

Going to your local smoke shop is a great time. It’s fun to pick out new glass, find a new flavor of a rolling paper you haven’t tried yet or even splurge on the epic hookah you and your friends have been drooling over. We want you to come in and browse all you like but what if you haven’t been in a smoke shop before? It can seem kind of intimidating when you are new to the scene but here is a handy guide to make your first visit a smooth one:

  1. Be ready to present your ID. If there is any chance that you might look under 18, we will card you and if you don’t have your ID, you will not be able to come in without it.
  1. Use caution around the shop. We sell many expensive breakable items that are on display. If you ask the shop attendant to look at a piece, handle it with care and don’t walk around the store with it unless you intend to buy it.
  1. Those big tall glass things are called “Water Pipes”. If you refer to any potential use of illegal substances, or ask us where you can buy illegal substances, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE. We at Manchester Adult Life Styles like to spice it up with edgy products for the alternative and discerning customer. However, we absolutely do not condone illegal activity of any kind; these products are sold with the intent for tobacco use only.
  1. Don’t be shy. Ask questions! If you aren’t sure how something works, would like more information or recommendations on products, our friendly and knowledgeable staff are here to help!
  1. Finally, stop by frequently. We get new products in all the time and we are constantly finding the newest in smoking technology. Feel free to ask what is new in stock.

We want you to come in and have a blast at Manchester Adult Life Styles. Our store is chock full of exciting and cheeky adult novelties, assorted glass products, jewelry, clothing and much more! So now that you know how to play it cool, stop by and take a look at our high quality products!

A Brief History Of Glass Art

Glass has been used for thousands of years for form and function. One of the best things about glass is that it can be made to be a usable form of art. This concept has captured the imaginations of artists and glass blowers and has opened a new world to the art of glass making.

Traditionally, glass has been used to make beads, bottles, windows, table tops and other useful items. From ancient Egypt, ancient Rome and ancient China, glass making can be found in all these cultures. The earliest instance of glass making was discovered in Jerusalem. The glass found there was made sometime between 37 BC and 4 BC. Through the ages, the highly valuable skill of glass making was passed down from generation to generation, slowly spreading all over the world. During the 1800’s the art of stained glass became extremely popular with Tiffany lamps and Victorian stained glass windows. Glass has always been a great medium for art, allowing it to be worked into the everyday life.

As glass blowing evolved over time, another use for the art came to light; the glass pipe. The glass pipe, made for smoking, became popular in the 1960’s. The grandfather of modern day glass blowing is Bob Snodgrass. He developed a special technique known as “fuming” that coats the inside of the pipe with silver. By fuming the glass, the user will notice a change in color in the pipe when smoked out of. Bob traveled with the Grateful Dead, making pipes for anyone who would buy them. He eventually taught his technique to other people who carried on the tradition. He became known as a huge influence in 420 culture and alternative hippy culture.

After the 1990’s glass pipe art exploded. People loved that they could smoke out of something beautiful and handmade, truly a work of art. Today there are some famous glass blowers that create mind bogglingly detailed pieces that sell for tens of thousands of dollars. A great documentary on the subject is Degenerate Art. It details the history of glass making and what the culture has turned into today. You can find examples of some top-notch work in this article: World Cannabis Week: World’s Greatest Glass Pipe Artists Gather at the Galleria Glass Exhibition.

Glass pipes are one of the many examples of how wonderful usable art can be. From turning clay on a wheel to wrapped metal wire jewelry, items are always more meaningful when you know someone spent their time and passion on a piece.
